Roadworks to improve Spalding to Holbeach route

01 June 2009

Description:

Drivers face delays on one of the busiest routes into Spalding as roadworks start on the A151 to Holbeach.

Essential maintenance work started today on the A151 between Holbeach and Spalding with the two-part project scheduled to be completed within five weeks.

The project will see old sections of the carriageway reconstructed and resurfaced as part of Lincolnshire Highways' commitment to keeping the county's roads safe for motorists.

A highways spokesperson said:"The county's main routes are all given a safety inspection each month, allowing us to spot early indications of deterioration in the surface.

"That means in cases like this we can intervene before the carriageway becomes unsafe, helping reduce the number of accidents on the county's roads.

"The safety of motorists is a key priority for the team, and we have recently been commended for our maintenance of the county's vast road network in the Municipal Journal's annual awards."

In order to minimise the disruption caused to motorists, the work will be carried out in two phases.

Phase one takes place between June 1 and 15 and will focus on the A151 Holbeach Road, Weston, at the roundabout near Baytree Garden Centre.

Phase two will then concentrate on a section of the A151 High Road, Whaplode, between Wallis Gate and the roundabout with the B1515 Spalding Road, Holbeach. This second phase will last from June 15 to July 3.

The spokesperson added:"The work is being staggered in order to ensure that access can be maintained throughout the project, and temporary traffic lights will be in place to help keep traffic flowing.

"However, these essential works are likely to mean delays for motorists. Lincolnshire County Council would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and urges drivers to use alternative routes where possible and allow extra time for journeys."

During the works, Highways recommends the A17 and A16 as an alternative route, particularly for LGV/HGV traffic.
