Roadworks on Spalding to Peterborough A1073

15 June 2009

Description:

Ageing sections of the A1073 road between Peterborough and Spalding are due to benefit from resurfacing from the end of June.

The resurfacing works are being coordinated to minimise disruption but will require closures of the A1073, with Lincolnshire and Peterborough councils asking the public for their patience and understanding.

For a three-week period, starting on June 29, Peterborough City Council will carry out important carriageway patching from the B1443 Masons Bridge to Wrights Drove on the county border.

Lincolnshire County Council will conduct structural patching and surfacing in two sections at the north end of the A1073; from the A1073/A16 roundabout to the junction with Drain Bank and from the junction with Stonegate, Cowbit (B1357) to Backgate, Cowbit.

Morgan Est will also use the opportunity to complete the construction of the new roundabout, at Crowland, as part of the Spalding to Eye Improvement Scheme.

Steve Willis, Divisional Highways Manager, said:"We have a duty to maintain the public highways and it's essential that we strengthen these well-used routes now, before they become dangerous to travel on. Of course, carriageways don't have an infinite life and will inevitably deteriorate over time, particularly if subject to such heavy traffic flows.

"The main aim of carrying out all of these works during the same period of time is to reduce the ultimate disruption to the travelling public.  Arranging for Morgan Est to carry out their roundabouts works simultaneously also removes the need for 24-hour traffic lights over a 14-16 week period.

"It is our intention to re-open the routes in three weeks but disruption in the meantime is unavoidable.  We therefore hope people will be tolerant as we work to ensure the safety of all those who travel on the roads."

The diversion route for the Peterborough works will be from the junction of A47/ A1073 along the A47 to A15 to A16, Spalding and vice versa. Local traffic for Crowland will be diverted via the B1443, Bukehorn Road to Thorney and then B1040 to Crowland. Properties and businesses within this work area will have access maintained. The emergency contact number during this time for Peterborough City Council is 01733 453516.

For Lincolnshire's improvements, the diversion for all through traffic will be A16/A15/A47. Residents and businesses that fall within the closure area will receive a letter and permit to allow them through the works area to their property. The contact number for any enquiries about these works is the Lincolnshire County Council customer service centre on 01522 782070.

For the Morgan Est roundabout works, the area between Wrights Drove and Carringtons Drove on the A1073 will be closed. The local diversion in place will be B1040, Thorney Road, B1443 Bukehorn Road, A1073 and vice versa. The contact number for this area of the works is 079762 59370.

All works will have advance signing in place. All parties involved apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause and offer assurances that any disruption will be kept to a minimum.
