Testing times for Spalding flood sirens

11 August 2009

Description:

The annual test of the flood siren system in Spalding and other parts of Lincolnshire will take place on Wednesday, August 12, between 9am and 3pm.

Lincolnshire's flood warning system comprises of 40 flood warning sirens situated along the coastline, and six at inland areas most at risk from river flooding, which operate as part of emergency plans to give valuable assistance in the event of flooding.

It is important that the sirens are tested annually to ensure that they operate correctly and to carry out any necessary maintenance or repairs before the winter.

Emergency Planning Manager, Ian Reed, said: "Clear advance warnings combined with effective flood protection schemes can reduce the impact of flooding. When a flood warning is received, the Emergency Planning Unit works closely with the Environment Agency, Emergency Services, the District, City and Borough Councils, to communicate this with county residents. The flood siren system is part of this wider warning network throughout the county."

After the test on Wednesday, if the sirens are sounded it will indicate that a severe flood warning is in force and the public should listen to local radio for further information and advice.
