The future of Spalding Flower Parade is assured for 2009 and the event could continue for another 50 years under plans announced today.

Behind the scenes meetings between Lincolnshire County Council's executive member for economic development Eddy Poll and other interested groups, including South Holland District Council, have resulted in a revival of the town's famous parade next year - with even more exciting developments planned for 2010.

A five-year plan is now in the pipeline to ensure the future of the parade, with ideas including a permanent home and all-year-round tourist attraction for the show.

Spalding Flower Parade could also evolve into a three-day festival of food and flowers, with a moving parade as its centrepiece.

Coun Poll said:"Spalding Flower Parade is an important tradition, both for the area and county as a whole, and we are absolutely thrilled to have ensured it remains as an important date in the county's calendar.

"It brings huge economic benefits as well as great community spirit. We are now working to keep the event relevant to the district and county in the future to gain wider support and involvement.

"We are the best in the business at food-growing and, by potentially incorporating a celebration of Lincolnshire produce into the event, it helps us showcase this on a grand scale. Following close work with the District Council and partners, industry and communities, we are now working to make the festival self-financing again."

Plans are to ensure the parade continues to be held on the Mayday bank holiday weekend.

A permanent home for the event would become a tourist attraction and possibly include a training centre where young people could learn traditional craft skills.
