Spalding to Holbeach road repairs after bad weather

19 February 2009

Description:

Motorists using the A151 between Spalding and Holbeach are being asked for their understanding and patience as freezing weather conditions have caused sections of the road to deteriorate, requiring part-closures to repair.

Weather-permitting, Lincolnshire County Council is planning to carry out the essential maintenance - which is mainly carriageway patching - from February 23.

The stretches of the A151 affected will be between the A16 roundabout and the roundabout at Weston, and between River Lane junction at Moulton and Stockwell Gate junction at Whaplode.

The works will be carried out using two-way temporary traffic lights, causing some unavoidable delays and the public are advised to allow extra time for their journeys. It is hoped that the works will be completed by March 27.

The problems are caused when water in cracks freezes and expands, fracturing the road surface.

Elsewhere in Lincolnshire, parts of the A15, A17 and A52 have also been identified as needing urgent attention due to the extreme weather conditions experienced this year.

A spokesperson for the county council's highways division said: "The recent freezing weather has unfortunately caused sections of the roads to deteriorate and we hope that motorists will understand the urgent need to resurface these, for everyone's safety.

"Extreme weather conditions, either prolonged heat or cold, can break up road surfaces when water seeps in and then expands as it freezes.

"If we were to do nothing, it would result in dangerous potholes forming, uneven driving surfaces and safety risks.

"We would therefore ask motorists to be patient and understanding and leave extra time for their journeys as we work to create a safe environment for all."

Rob Brooks, road and rail account manager at the Met Office, added: "Following the coldest January since 1997, average temperatures during the first ten days of February stand around 3.5 degrees below the average for this period over the last 30 years."
