Description:
New arrivals to the UK are being given the chance to learn English thanks to a scheme in Spalding.
The Let's Meet and Talk scheme allows people such as migrant workers to learn English in an informal, friendly atmosphere.
Meeting at Spalding library once a month, new arrivals join local residents to chat and take part in fun activities.
The scheme not only helps people get to grips with the English language and culture, but also gives them the chance to meet new friends.
The scheme also gives local residents a chance to learn first-hand about foreign cultures, hopefully helping to dispel many of the stereotypical views of migrant workers.
It is hoped that this will prove an important first step in integrating new arrivals into the community.
Alona Tirzite, community engagement officer for Lincolnshire County Council, said: "I know from personal experience that it is far easier to learn a foreign language by spending time talking to native speakers.
"The Let's Meet and Talk scheme is a lot of fun for both local residents and migrants. It's a great way to bring together people from different cultures, helping build bridges between different areas of the community."
The next session will take place on March 4 with following meetings on the first Wednesday on every month.
Meetings start at 7pm and last for an hour and a half. Everyone is welcome and free refreshments will also be on offer.
If you would like to take part and want to find out more, contact Alona Tirzite on 01522 552881.
