Description:
Pet owners in Spalding and South Holland are being asked to hand over their keen-nosed hounds to help Lincolnshire Police. The canine call follows on from the success of an earlier appeal when several animals were put forward for assessment to see if they were up to the challenge of becoming sniffer dogs.
Lincolnshire Police uses dogs in a number of varied roles, ranging from general purpose policing duties, to specialist roles, such as drugs or explosive search dogs.
Sergeant Paul Cragg, who heads up Lincolnshire Police’s Dog Section says, “We were really pleased with the response to the first appeal, when we were inundated with offers of dogs.
“We have another initial training course running in February 2009, as well as two existing dogs to replace, and as such, we'd like to ask for further support from the public to help us fill these places”.
The breeds that the police are after are the gun dog varieties e.g. Springer spaniels, Cocker spaniels, Pointers, Labradors, flat coat Retrievers etc., aged between 10-18 months old.
Sergeant Cragg finished by saying, “Our dogs are treated as valuable members of our team and will have a happy and fulfilled life, as well as making a really positive contribution towards making our county safer”.
Anyone who feels they might have a suitable dog which they are willing to offer to Lincolnshire Police, in order to be assessed and potentially donated to them, is asked to contact Pc Bob Newham on 07810 855572 or Lincolnshire Police Dog Section on 01522 527924.
