Description:
Road safety improvements that have been hailed as "safer for pedestrians, better for drivers" will be given the finishing touches in Spalding this June.An anti-skid surface will be laid at the new Puffin crossing on Winsover Road on Sunday, June 14. This marks the end of a project to increase safety and help ensure a smoother flow of traffic through the town.
A Highways spokesperson said: "This is the final stage of a scheme to improve the safety of pedestrians and motorists at this busy location.
"The crossing has benefits for all road users, and has been promoted by the Government's Department of Transport as 'safer for pedestrians, better for drivers'.
"It gives pedestrians more time to cross, if necessary, while also ensuring drivers are not kept waiting at red lights longer than need be.
"We had hoped to keep the road open during the works, in order to minimise the inconvenience to motorists and local businesses. However, we felt that we could not guarantee the safety of the public or our contractors in doing so. Therefore, the road will be closed while the new surface is laid.
"In order to ensure that any disruption is minimal, we are aiming to complete the works within 24 hours and have scheduled them to take place on a Sunday, when there are significantly fewer road users."
Winsover Road will be closed between Station Approach and St Thomas Road. There will be a diversion route in place and advanced information signs will be erected prior to the works taking place.
Lincolnshire County Council apologises for any inconvenience these important works may cause. Local access will be maintained at all times, but drivers are respectfully requested to use alternative routes where possible.
If the anti-skid surface cannot be laid on June 14 because of poor weather conditions, the work will be rescheduled for the following Sunday, June 21.
HGVs will be diverted along the A16, A15 and A151 and there will be signs on the A16 and A151 to notify them of the closure. Other vehicles can follow the local diversion.
